What Is a Wedding Seating Chart, and How Do You Make One?

A wedding seating chart, or table plan as it's more often called in the UK, is the display that tells guests which table they're sitting at for the meal. Behind it sits a second plan for you and the venue showing exactly who sits in which seat, so the caterers know where the vegetarian is.
## Do you actually need one?
For a sit-down meal, yes. Without one, couples split up, the shy cousin ends up alone and the last people through the door fight over the table by the toilets. For a relaxed buffet or a pizza van in a field you can happily skip it.
## The top table
The traditional British top table runs in a straight line facing the room, with the couple in the middle, then parents and the best man and maid of honour either side. With blended families it can get complicated, which is why lots of couples now choose a sweetheart table for two and seat parents at their own tables nearby. Both are fine. Pick the one that causes the fewest awkward conversations.
## A calm way to do it
1. Wait until your RSVPs are in. There's no point seating people who aren't coming.
2. Group guests into natural clusters: uni friends, work, Mum's side, Dad's side, neighbours.
3. Put the clusters onto tables, then fill gaps with people who'll get on.
4. Place older guests away from the speakers and near the exit.
5. Put children with their parents unless you're doing a kids' table with an entertainer.
6. Sleep on it, then look again.
## Round tables or long tables?
Rounds of 8 to 10 are easy to talk across. Long banquet tables fit more people into barns and look beautiful, but guests only really talk to the three people nearest them. Ask your venue what they have and what fits your numbers.
